Remembering the Artist: Sandra Murphy-Pak

Sandra Murphy-Pak's legacy is one of boundless creativity and unbreakable spirit. Recently passed, Sandra leaves behind a powerful story of resilience and innovation as an artist who redefined the limits of art and life while living with ALS, the disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Hers was a journey that reached new dimensions of achievement despite—and even because of—this profound challenge. Sandra’s life, rich in creativity, was a continuation of a lineage of artists in her family, whose talents have spanned generations.

Sandra's connection to ALS was deeply personal: her sister, brother, and mother had each battled the same disease. A rare occurrence of a genetic form of ALS impacting almost the entire family. These shared experiences with ALS became a profound part of Sandra's journey, imbuing her art and life with even greater purpose and poignancy.

Undeterred by the obstacles ALS presented, she developed her remarkable “Footwork” series in 2015, using her right foot as her sole creative tool. Through the beauty of community partnership and the love of friends and family Sandra was able to create until the last hour of her life.

The series has been widely celebrated in national and regional publications and displayed at major medical and educational institutions.

Sandra’s work as an artist and educator spanned over 30 years, but her career took a pivotal turn during her tenure as an artist-in-residence at the UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine Program. While engaged in this role, Sandra impacted patients and colleagues with her creative approach, leading projects and fostering healing across the hospital community. She saw this period—despite her diagnosis—as the most creatively fulfilling chapter of her life, stating, “When I set to work, I am drawing from my own internal universe, out from my right foot, and onto the canvas. The viewer, by resting the eye on the black center, might envision a portal into another dimension, a place of rest within the eternal movement of life. The action of the circle centers around the still point—our individual consciousness.”

Sandra held both graduate and undergraduate degrees in fine arts and art education and touched countless lives through her work in Gainesville, Florida, and as far away as Rwanda, where she served as a teacher, volunteer, and friend. Her public installations and commissioned pieces are testaments to her integrity, ingenuity, and generosity of spirit, and her artistic legacy endures in a devoted following worldwide.

She was a mother of three thriving daughters, a beloved aunt to five nieces, and four nephews, a great-aunt to five nephews and a niece, and the beloved center of a vibrant network of friends and admirers, Sandra's courage, joy, and skill continue to inspire. Her journey, woven into her family’s artistic lineage and marked by shared resilience in the face of ALS, reflects a life lived with purpose and creative vibrance.
